Tobold's MMORPG Blog —
I get a lot of mail from people asking me to have a look at their blog or link to them, something which I'm happy to do, if I find something interesting. But today I want to talk about a thought that struck me when reading We Fly Spitfires: Hey, finally a blog with a readable layout! So my apologies to the author if I'm not discussing his post ...

Is raiding only a matter of time?
Of Teeth and Claws —
Writing over at We Fly Spitfires, Gordon asserts that there is no real skill involved in raiding and as long as you invest enough time in the activity, loot will eventually fall like rain: MMORPGs are not hard to play. They aren’t Street Fighter or Unreal Tournament. The most challenging aspect is probably interacting with other players and organizing a large number of them to tackle raids. That being said, any player, given enough time, can achieve anything because all they need to do is tag along for the ride. I’ve seen this a lot in raiding with DPS ...

Why MMORPG's Are Like Dogs
Player Versus Developer —
Via Tipa's daily blogroll post is a post from We Fly Spitfires comparing MMORPG's to dating stereotypes of women. Pete of Dragonchasers fame found an even better response comparing MMORPG's to menfolks. I don't have any new and amusing dating stereotypes to add, but my wife and I are in the process of hunting for a dog. Here are some dog comparisons that are sure to offend fans of the games and the dog breeds in question, as well as anyone who doesn't like the badly mixed metaphors that are about to ensue. World of ...
The World’s Toughest Audience…
Random Ogre Thoughts —
... Gordon, from We Fly Spitfires, had an entry that reminded me of what I meant to blog about – the MMO audience… only he isn’t only talking about the audience.
Most MMO players (at least the ones that blog about it… kind of like me) are like that guy that eats around the mold on a hamburger bun and all his fries before going back to the cash and complaining that their is mold on the bun. Of course, he wants another entirely. Oh, and the fries too.
We pay for the box, like we do for any other game. That box almost always comes ...
feedproxy.google.com >> Is Alternate Advancement Just An Illusion?
EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 News —
I’ve always considered the point of alternative advancement (Talents in WoW, AAs in EQ/EQ2, Feats in AoC, Masteries in WAR etc) to be to customise your avatar and let you have a more personalised roleplaying experienced. However, I’m starting to question if this sense of choice and personalisation is really just a big illusion.

Twinking is NOT Cheating
Of Teeth and Claws —
Gordon, of We Fly Spitfires, is all riled up about twinking and thinks that it's a vile form of cheating. Personally I couldn't disagree more, and instead of responding in his comments I felt that such an wrong-headed notion deserved to be repudiated with a full blog article. Before reading on, I recommend familiarizing yourself with Gordon's point of view: ...
feedproxy.google.com >> Is It Acceptable To Have To Queue?
EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 News —
The blogs are awash with tales of woe regarding the queues in Aion. I myself was no exception and logged on to face a 3 hour queue on Perento (EU server) last night. Suffice to say, I thought “screw that” and started up on another server, Castor, which had a much smaller queue. Fortunately my [...] Original post from: We Fly Spitfires - MMORPG Blog > > Is It Acceptable To Have To Queue?
Short recap of some blogposts
BullCopra —
... that I'm something not so average anymore and my sense of being average somehow degrading. Oh, well. Keen from Keen and Graev's Gaming Blog pours even more salt to the wounds in his excellent post about how the developers want us to perceive the game world our avatars explore. Really made me think about how I have perceived the game worlds I've visited and what has been missing I have not seen in them.Great reading.
And after I read Gordon's post (We Fly Spitfires) about raiding being the end game of MMORPG's I realized that the angst ...
feedproxy.google.com >> The Dullest MMORPG Expansions
EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 News —
MMORPG expansions are usually a time for developers to show of their hot new skills, their amazing and creative ideas for pushing their baby forward or for managers to try out their new development team in China. Either way, I expect a lot from an expansion. I want to be wowed, I wanted to inspired [...] Original post from: We Fly Spitfires - MMORPG Blog > > The Dullest MMORPG Expansions

EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 News —
I’ve always been slightly worried about microtransactions in MMORPGs and it seems like as more and more developers undertake them, the more my fears are coming to fruition. Over the last few years there’s been an increasing trend for games companies to charge for “extras” and whilst some seem perfectly reasonable, some come across as [...] Original post from: We Fly Spitfires - MMORPG Blog > > Microtransactions Can’t Be Trusted

EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 News —
A couple of days ago I received an email from SOE promoting the new Everquest 2 expansion, Sentinel’s Fate, which is due out in February. To be honest, I’m not that excited about the expansion because it’s just another top heavy add-on that increases the level cap and adds a bunch of new high-level content.

EQ2-Daily.com EQ2 News —
The Victorians were not only famous for their prudish views on the fine art of reproduction but also, according to many sources, equally famous for their hypocritical acts of sexuality and plain kinkiness that went on behind closed doors. Sex in the Victorian era was a true example of maintaining an outer standard and saying [...] Original post from: We Fly Spitfires - MMORPG Blog > > Buying Gold Is Like Sex In The Victorian Era
Grouping versus soloing as the genre evolves
Massively —
... Back in the day, there were two ways to play most MMOs -- you could form a group with other players, or you could stay inside the cities and wait. Those days are long gone, of course, and it's a rare game that doesn't allow a player to do quite a bit without the support framework of a group. But there's a point to be made about what's been lost in the process, and We Fly Spitfires has an interesting take on how ...
Why RMT won't go away
Massively —
... test of Occam's razor. When developers want to get more money from an existing game, there are usually better ways to run it, such as the Champions Online model or the Dungeons and Dragons Online approach. He also tackles the infamous statement that the farmers are paying customers and therefore the company has even less incentive to stop them.
So if everyone hates RMT, why is it still around? The article briefly touches upon it, but We Fly Spitfires had a recent post that articulates more specifically: more people buy gold ...
