2009 is not 2004, yet after reading this post over at TAGN , it sure seems that way. Let’s define the environment WoW launched in first, because John’s recount seems to have forgotten a few minor details.
1) EQ2 launched just before WoW, pulling players out of their established ...

Remember back in the summer of 2008 we
were all making WAR subscriber predictions, and we figured...
they would be in the range of 1-100 million, depending on how high your fanboy rating was? Everyone reasoned that if WoW can get 11 million, WAR can at ...

and what it all means. There were several comments...
on this blog saying that 300k wasn't that bad, and as Syncaine pointed out , those subscription numbers probably mean that WAR is the number 2 ...

Warhammer - Anger and Denial
The Ancient Gaming Noob —
... I seem to have struck a nerve with yesterday’s post, because Syncaine is up today with another post rife with anger and denial.
And he didn’t even wish my wife a happy birthday.
He is back raging against the “WoW Tourists,” only they have now be demoted to “WoW Lemmings.” It seems that they have just destroyed the MMO space in general and his pet game, Warhammer Online, in particular.
Damn those WoW Lemmings for buying nearly one million copies of Warhammer Online!
Damn them for ...
Lemmings Play WoW…
Random Ogre Thoughts —
... No really, it’s true. See?
I didn’t leave WAR because I thought WoW was better or because I thought I’d be less cool for playing it over WoW? I’m not playing WoW because the masses are. I’m playing WoW because it’s entertaining and fits in with the amount of time I want to spend playing a game (though I do play it a little much at times).
I left WAR for the following reasons:
- The begining content was fun but after awhile I got bored or frustrated
- PVP was fun until people figured out bugs and used them to their ...
World of Warcraft’s success is greatly because of luck.
mendax.org —
... One of the primary reasons that World of Warcraft (WoW) managed to make MMOGs mainstream is because of timing. That’s not to say that WoW isn’t a good game in its own right, but chances are, if the stars weren’t in perfect alignment, WoW wouldn’t have amazed observers with its vacuum-like prowess at sucking in millions of gamers. Hardcore Casual’s syncaine wrote a great synopsis of these events: ...

“Montana Sucks! Now go home and tell all your friends!”
Recent discussion of WoW tourists brings to mind the problem of all tourists: “let’s go somewhere different and whine about how things are not like they were back home. The food here is funny. The toilets are weird. They act like they don’t even speak English.”
The tourists go looking for virgin wilderness, something pristine and untouched. Then they leave tire tracks, litter, and poo; they call for modern conveniences, ideally heated cabins with indoor ...

EverQuest and the Intoxication of Nostalgia

EverQuest 2 Review: A Return to Norrath
mmogamer.com 9/1/2009 — MMOGs tend to last for a long time, sometimes many years. This is why Ryan Plas has picked up EverQuest 2 ; to give it another review and see how it holds up and taking into account both what kind of development it has made and compare it to today’s competition.

Everquest In Your Browser
blog.weflyspitfires.com 10/13/2009 — There’s been a bunch of rumours floating around about a possible Everquest 3 game but personally I don’t think SOE will release another high profile, fully fledged MMORPG in the same vein as EQ2. Instead, what I think - or rather what I hope - is that we’ll see a more ...
