On the new vanity pet store
Duct Tape and a Prayer — Just so we’re clear, spending hundreds of dollars buying booster packs of the TCG (or on eBay) to get a chance at a Spectral Tiger Cub is okay, but spending $10 at the Blizzard store to get a Pandaren Monk isn’t? I just wanted to make sure we were all clear on that. (For the record, I think it’s fine. It’s just not in my budget right now.) Tackling a Boss Monster
Nerf the Cat — ... So, I decided to make a stab at tackling my Feed Reader today, in some of my spare time. I’m greatly enjoying reading everyone’s blog posts, even though I’m hideously behind with things. Haven’t finished it yet, but here’s some of the things that caught my attention: Blizzard to start selling in-game cosmetic pets for $10 a pop. I’ve been playing the refer-a-friend time with Spinks of late. We’re at level 40 now and my first month is over. Might sub another month to get to 60 when the R-A-F bonus runs out. But I hate microtransations, ...

WoW: Milking the Tauren For All Its Worth
Bio Break — ... If a ten dollar kung fu panda bear can’t get Darren back into blogging, well, I really don’t know what can. I mean, you can RIDE a $10 microtransaction horse, but this thing won’t even carry your groceries for you. Also, Blizzard is just getting silly with their shameless money grubbing tactics.  Ten bucks?  2/3rds of a monthly subscription?  Seriously? ...

It’s a Pet Store not a Gear Store
World of MatticusBlizzard’s opened up the virtual pet store where you can purchase the first of several pets to come. I don’t actually know this, but I’m fairly certain we’ll be seeing more purchasable pets later. What’s the big deal? In a nutshell, the micro-transaction MMO model involves consumers paying for certain items. I have a friend of mine who plays Maple Story and I routinely tease her about buying a wedding dress for 5 bucks or other stuff only for it to disappear about 3 months. Gear has an expiry date it seems. The Korean “free” MMOs employ ...

World of Warcraft slowly enters the world of selling virtual items
Big Download Blog — ... real money as other MMOs have done. That may finally be changing, however, as Blizzard has now introduced a way to buy in-game pets for your World of Warcraft character via Blizzard's online store. Currently only two pets are available for $10 each; Lil' K.T. and Pandaren Monk (shown to the right) Blizzard has also announced that from now until December 31, half of the proceeds from the purchase of the latter character will go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Much ado about not a damn thing
Kill Ten Rats — ... So, as you might have heard, the almighty Blizz is selling cosmetic, non-combat, just fluff pets via their game store. Wow.com has the lowdown. I’m reading people up in arms about this already. I don’t see the problem. I actually think it’s a pretty good move. We talked about this ...

The Daily Grind: Your thoughts on Blizzard's new pets
Massively — ... In a move some expected and others didn't, Blizzard decided to remove that last layer insulating its game from the practice of RMT: real money transactions. Previously, players had to purchase the trading card game to get the special extra pets for the game, and ...

Blizzard Gets Microtransactions
Nerfbat — ... Though I consider name changes and the like to be a lesser form of microtransactions, Blizzard has crossed into the real world of microtransactions by selling in-game pets. While donating half of the proceeds from the Pandaren Monk pet (and only that pet) is a nice gesture, it’s an obvious gimmick. $10 also seems a bit steep. I predict more than a few parents glaring angrily in the direction of Blizzard for that price tag when their kids beg them for the cute pets. More than anything, I’m looking forward to seeing player reactions. ...

Blizzard Pet Store: A Cue for QQ?
Mend Pet — So if you haven’t heard the news, Blizzard has added two extremely adorable non-combat pets to the Blizzard Store.  This was instantly controversial, with people calling Blizzard out for adding ‘microtransactions’ to the game, and being profiteers or some such. They announced it yesterday.  I’m sure half the blogging world has a post on it by now, that’s what we bloggers do, you see.  We hear juicy topics of debate and our mouths start watering until we get to our keyboard. Well, I had a whole post typed up about this ...

WoW now with microtransaction … or macrotransaction
Ogrebear's Thoughts — For the low low low price of 10 bucks. 10,000 pennies you can buy an in game pet in WoW. There are 2 pets a Pandaren Monk and Lil K’T pet. If you buy the Pandaren pet 5 bucks will go to the make a wish foundation (which is pretty cool). The pet doesn’t do anything, (can’t help in combat), it is just cosmetic. More info here 10 bucks for a freaking pet???? A pet that follow your around and does nothing…. When did microtransaction become macrotransaction? I am perfectly find with Microtransaction, but the big MMO companies ...

Shop Smart, RMT Pet Shop…Smart?
The Pink Pigtail Inn — ... At the bottom of the Pet Store FAQ there is this question: “Will you be introducing the ability to buy epic weapons/etc. in the future, for example?” The relevant part of the response is “the Pet Store service is entirely optional and intended to provide players another means to enjoy World of Warcraft in a way that isn't detrimental to the game and that doesn't detract from the gameplay experience for players who choose not to use the service.” Notice the artful wording in that response. They avoid a direct answer to a simple question and that is never a good sign. Of course, ...

The Joystiq Podcast — ... and the onset of the game's fifth anniversary (yes, it's been almost five years since Blizzard brought their MMO online), Blizzard has finally done something that many thought they would never directly do: start selling in-game items for real money. There was lots of argument about that one this last week, and you'll find that, along with the usual news and insights, over ...
